Global Warming: An Overview
The internationally acclaimed documentary film entitled “An Inconvenient Truth’ by former Vice President Al Gore gave us a revealing and shocking truth on the effects of Global Warming to the future of all mankind. It presents its myth and realities behind this global problem and on how we can unanimously help save the dying planet. This problem triggers mass information campaign and raises awareness to every citizen of the world. To better understand this phenomenon, is to better know it.
As defined by the Wikipedia website, Global Warming refers to the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation. To simply put it, it is the change of climate to recent warming that implies human influence and activities. Research shows that the main contributor or cause of this warming can be attributed mainly on human activities such as pollution etc.
This worldwide phenomenon gives us lasting effects that destroys both the natural environment and human life. This changed of temperature may result to glacial retreat and worldwide sea level rise. It may also result in flooding and drought when the amount and pattern of precipitation continuously changes. There may also be changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Other effects may include changes in agricultural yields, reduced summer stream flows, species extinctions and increases in the range of disease vectors. Because of the damages it brings, economy in every level is at stake.
The causes and effects of Global Warming are intellectually portrayed as a problematic reality that needs to be addressed. The film “Inconvenient Truth” gives us the ‘earth-before-and-after’ picture of this phenomenon. The awareness campaign circulating today and the effort exerted by government and non-government organizations give us the wake up call and drum beat. We may have entered the period of consequences, as Al Gore said, but it is not yet too late to rectify our mistakes and continuously become responsible citizens of the world.
