By observing students’ attitude and behavior in class, you would know if they are apathetic. They would prefer to play PSP during lecture hours or just scribble into their notebooks with things that do not matter at all, to avoid the discussions in their classes.
We might notice that apathetic students have short attention span on any subject matter. They go to school not because they want to learn but because they are required to so. Apathetic students should undergo intervention or rehabilitation process before their case worsens. This process will not only involve the students themselves but also their teachers, parents and classmates.
Teachers can start the process by means of counseling. Engage the student into a one-on-one talk. Know the possible reasons for their attitude. The students might be having family problems back home, they might be drug dependents or maybe the subject matter they are enrolled to is not their interest. The teachers have a big role on resolving the student problem. The teachers can formulate a more flexible curriculum and method to level-off with the interest of the students who possess this attitude. The teachers can also give extra-assignments, which is in the interest of the student within the subject matter, to give him extra points. An after class one-on-one discussion might also be effective. Most importantly, the teachers should have an open communication with the students. In this case, the teachers must tell the parents the actual case of their offspring in class.
Upon knowing that their children have a problem with school, the parents should intervene to help the students. The behavior of the students might be the reflection of parenting style, low monitoring of the parents to their children or sibling rivalry. The parents can engage the students into a deeper conversation on latter’s insight and problem with the family. If both parents are working, at least one of them should also spend extra time with the problematic students to show their parental affection. Quality time and family bonding should also be undertaken to make their child feel and realize that his family is supportive and is at always at their back. Moreover, the parents can also help the students with their homework and lessons. Parents should also exert effort to persuade their children to stop his vices, if they have, that are affecting their studies. Finally, avoiding callous remarks on the students’ performance but encouraging statement every now and then will also be a great help.
Classmates of the problematic students can also help. Inside the class, they should encourage the problematic students into the discussion. Instead of giving insensitive remarks every time the students fail to answer right, a pat at the back and a simple reminder that they can still do good next time, is already a big help. Outside class, the classmates can also encourage the apathetic student to join them into group studies and discussions. They should also persuade them to give up their vices, if they have, that are affecting their studies.
Helping and remolding apathetic students is a two-way process. Their immediate surroundings, including parents, teachers and classmates are part of the process. But, the process will also include the students themselves, to be open and willing to change their apathetic behavior.
